We have created an association called 'Friends of women of Freedom'; the road where the majority of the victims of sex slavery here in Poitiers stand is aptly enough called the road of freedom!
The main objective of our association is to create a network of people capable and willing to translate anything and everything necessary in order to respond to the distress much too often experienced in silence by women demanding asylum. Here in Poitiers these asylum seekers find themselves forced into prostitution either simply in order to live or to repay their 'debts' imposed on them by men and their ongoing coersion, threats and violence.
These women speak english (the majority are Nigerian) but their need to understand their letters, phone calls or meetings is often urgent and their problems critical. A volunteer willing to accompany a victim to a meeting with a social worker, lawyer or medical representative is indispensable particularly when the level of English is minimal and the support to the victim immense. The meetings we have assisted so far have ranged from making statements concerning sexual and physical violence, helping a victim to understand the procedure of her abortion and holding her hand whilst she cried and explaining how one victim's clitoris reconstruction is going to work...

Son but essentiel est de constituer un réseau de personnes susceptibles d'aider à traduire des documents écritsmais aussi de l’interprétât, pour répondre à la détresse souvent trop silencieuse mais toujours bien réelle des demandeuses d'asile. Ici, à Poitiers, elles se trouvent forcées à se prostituer simplement pour vivre ou pour rembourser leurs « dettes », contraintes à subir l’esclavage moderne, pieds et poings liés à des proxénètes sans scrupule.
Ces femmes parlent couramment l’anglais, mais leurs situations sont souvent critiques et leurs besoins urgents. Par exemple, il est impératif pour elles de comprendre les courriers officiels écrits bien sûr en français, et donc de les traduire en anglais. En outre un(e) interprète bénévole est donc indispensable lors de divers rendez-vous, qu’ils soient médicaux, juridiques ou autres. Trop souvent des cas extrêmes ou plus que délicats surviennent : rédiger les circonstances d’une agression et ses conséquences, rédiger les détails d'un processus d'avortement, et ceux de reconstruction clitoridienne.Nous avons une urgence particulièrement grave.
